What makes an anti-bullying assembly actually work

Most students have heard “don’t bully” a hundred times. Here’s what changes when an assembly speaks to identity first.

Samuel Picou·

Most students can recite the anti-bullying rules before the assembly starts. Be kind. Tell an adult. Don’t be a bystander. They’ve heard it — and yet the same patterns show up in the hallway the next morning.

In my experience, the difference isn’t more rules. It’s a different starting point.

Start with identity, not behavior

Students who don’t know their own value tend to either absorb cruelty or pass it on. When a young person begins to believe their life matters, two things happen: they stop accepting the labels others give them, and they start seeing the people around them differently.

When students understand that their life matters, they start treating each other like it does.

What school leaders can look for

  • Interaction, not just information — students should be participating, not only listening.
  • Age-appropriate language that respects where students actually are.
  • A clear, doable next step students can take the same day.
  • A message staff can reinforce in the weeks after the assembly.

That’s the heart of Finding Your Purpose. If you’re planning a kindness week, a back-to-school kickoff, or an anti-bullying initiative, I’d love to talk about bringing it to your campus.
